When sunshine stopped feeling simple
There was a time when being in the sun felt effortless. Long walks, summer holidays, time outdoors with family. I never had to think twice about it.
That changed when I began listening more closely to people living with lupus. I saw how deeply UV exposure could impact daily life. Time outdoors was no longer simple. It required planning, vigilance, and constant awareness.
Through those conversations, I began to understand the wider challenges faced by people living with photosensitivity and other sun sensitive skin conditions. Flare ups, discomfort, and the daily calculations around shade, timing and protection were part of normal life.
What became clear was this: reliable sun protection needed to go beyond sunscreen. There was a need for consistent, dependable UV protection built into everyday clothing.
SunSibility began with that understanding. A commitment to create UPF 50+ garments that support skin health while allowing people to feel comfortable, confident, and prepared outdoors.
That is where SunSibility began. Not as a business idea first, but as a feeling. A quiet determination to create something that would allow people to step outside with confidence again.
This is the story of why I started SunSibility, what we stand for today, and how we are growing into our next chapter.

Where It All Began
A personal turning point
My journey started with awareness. I saw how limited the options were for people who needed reliable sun protection built into their clothing. So much of the conversation around sun care focused solely on sunscreen. While SPF is important, it is not always practical or sufficient on its own, particularly for those who are especially sensitive to UV exposure.
I began asking myself a simple question. What if clothing could do more?
Not heavy, clinical looking garments. Not pieces that made people feel different. But well designed clothing that offered meaningful protection while still feeling comfortable and wearable.
Having studied Product Development for the Fashion Industries at London College of Fashion, I had the tools to begin exploring that idea. With the support of a start-up loan from The Prince’s Trust, SunSibility slowly began to take shape.
From the beginning, my intention was clear. I wanted to:
- Help people enjoy the sun safely
- Create clothing that felt normal and comfortable
- Offer reliable UPF 50+ protection
- Support individuals living with sun sensitivity
SunSibility was never about chasing trends. It was about solving a real problem for real people.
Learning the Hard Way
Starting SunSibility was both exciting and overwhelming. There is no manual for building something in a niche space. I had to listen, learn and adjust constantly.
I spoke with customers who had lupus, vitiligo, porphyria and eczema. Some had stopped doing things they once loved because managing UV exposure felt exhausting. Others layered clothing in ways that felt awkward or uncomfortable.
Those conversations shaped everything.
What I realised quickly
Protective clothing had to be:
- Scientifically credible
- Lightweight and breathable
- Suitable for everyday life
- Built for real life, not just protection
Developing garments using UPF 50+ fabric that blocks at least 97.5 percent of UV radiation required persistence. Testing, refining and sometimes going back to the drawing board became part of the journey.
From the beginning, I was clear about the mission. What strengthened that resolve were the messages from customers. A note about feeling confident at a family wedding. A message about enjoying time outdoors without anxiety. Each story was a reminder that this work matters.
What We Stand For
As SunSibility grew, so did our sense of responsibility.
At our heart, we exist to help people enjoy the sun safely. We believe sun awareness should not feel frightening. It should feel empowering.
Our guiding principles
- Protection you can trust
All SunSibility garments are designed using UPF 50+ fabric, blocking at least 97.5 percent of UV radiation. - Education and awareness
We believe understanding UV exposure is an important part of caring for skin health. - Support for vulnerable skin
We are committed to serving those living with photosensitivity and related conditions.
We are proud to work closely with organisations connected to skin health and sun sensitivity, including Lupus UK, The Vitiligo Society, The Albinism Fellowship, XP Support Group, BASC, British Red Cross, The British Porphyria Association and The National Eczema Society.
These relationships keep us grounded. They remind us that behind every garment is a person navigating daily life.
Why UPF Matters
When people hear UPF 50+, it can sound technical. In reality, it is simply a measure of how much UV radiation fabric allows through to the skin.
| UPF Rating | UV Radiation Blocked | Level of Protection |
| UPF 15 | 93.3 percent | Good |
| UPF 30 | 96.7 percent | Very Good |
| UPF 50+ | 97.5 percent or more | Excellent |
Clothing with UPF 50+ provides consistent protection without needing to be reapplied. It becomes part of your routine rather than something extra to remember.
For those managing conditions such as lupus, vitiligo, porphyria or eczema, that consistency can make a meaningful difference.
How We Are Different
As awareness of sun protection grows, more companies are entering the market. What has always set SunSibility apart is our 25+ years of knowledge, dedication, and understanding of the people we serve.
We focus on what matters most: trust and consistency. That means creating solutions that fit real life, not just a product you use occasionally.
We think about:
- How clothing feels on the body
- How it fits into daily routines
- How it supports confidence alongside protection
- How it becomes a reliable part of someone’s wardrobe
SunSibility is not about fear. It is about understanding needs and creating solutions that help people enjoy the outdoors with confidence.
We want people to attend garden parties, go on coastal walks and sit in the park with friends. We simply want them to feel prepared.
Growth and Gratitude
Over time, SunSibility has been recognised with awards including the Global Business Excellence Awards. While recognition is lovely, what truly matters to me are the messages from customers.
Each story reminds me why I started.
Growth has taught me patience. It has taught me to lead with empathy. It has also shown me that purpose must remain at the centre of every decision.
We are not perfect, and we continue to learn. But our commitment to skin health, UV awareness and preventative care remains constant.
What Comes Next
SunSibility today is not the same as the small idea I once sketched out. We have grown. Our community has grown. Our understanding has deepened.
That growth is leading us into a new chapter.
We are preparing to evolve our website and refresh our brand identity so it better reflects who we have become. This evolution is not about changing our purpose. It is about expressing it more clearly.
We want our next chapter to:
- Strengthen our authority in sun protection and skin health
- Deepen our connection with our community
- Make education around UV exposure even more accessible
- Reflect the warmth and care that define us
It feels like a natural step forward.
A Final Reflection
When I think about why I created SunSibility, it always comes back to people. The mother who wants to watch her child play in the garden without anxiety. The individual managing a chronic condition who still wants to travel. Anyone who loves being outdoors but needs that extra layer of reassurance.
Sunshine is part of life. With the right awareness and protection, it can still be something we embrace.
SunSibility was built on that belief. As we step into our next phase, that belief remains unchanged.
Thank you for choosing us to walk that journey with you.
